Morning Call - August 17, 2020
Thunderstorm risk continues
Mist/fog east

Issued: 0530hrs Monday 17th August 2020
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Low pressure drifts slowly northward across the UK today bringing outbreaks of rain across all but the far north of Scotland. Thunderstorms continue to be a risk for more southern areas with torrential downpours possible.

Good Morning,

Another mixed day ahead for the UK and Ireland as we start the new week. Mist and fog patches are likely over eastern parts of northern England and Scotland first thing while patchy outbreaks of rain, this locally heavy, spreads from northern England into southern and central parts of Scotland. Further south, across Ireland, England and Wales, showers become locally heavy and thunderstorms become increasingly likely as the morning progresses.

The thunderstorm risk spreads northward over England, Ireland and Wales into the afternoon with more central and northern portions of these countries becoming the main areas of concern into the afternoon. Locally, any thunderstorms that do develop could produce hail and/or torrential downpours. Over Scotland, a band of patchy rain also spreads northward, this likely to be heaviest over eastern parts of the country.

Into the evening and the thunderstorm risk for most areas diminishes though one or two clusters may persist. Rain continues to spread over northern Scotland while mist and fog patches develop once more over eastern coastal regions.

Have a good day!

Claire
