Chilly in midweek
Wintry showers

Issued: 1000hrs Saturday 27th January 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Blustery winds, possible gales

Following a mild weekend, temperatures will drop a few degrees by Monday as a cold front moves southwards, bringing some rain to most places, heaviest in the west. Changeable conditions during midweek, with brisk winds and further rain. Showers are likely to turn increasingly wintry as winds turn northerly. A risk of frost and ice on some nights.

Tuesday 30/01/18
A ridge of high pressure exists across southern Britain early in the day, whilst fronts are preparing to move in from the Atlantic. A bright start for many central and eastern areas, and it may stay dry all day here, although cloud is expected to thicken from the west. Rain soon develops for western Scotland, Ireland and later western parts of England & Wales - timing uncertain. Starting chilly, with frost for some. Highs 5 to 8C.

Wednesday 31/01/18
Fronts pass eastwards overnight, bringing a spell of rain to many areas. A showery day in the west and north - heavy bursts merging to almost constant rain for several hours in some areas. Snow over the hills, and may fall to lower levels at times. Possible hail and thunder. Sunny spells and scattered showers for central, south & eastern Britain. Squally winds, a risk of gales around western coasts. Feeling chilly, temperatures 3 to 7C.

Thursday 01/02/18
A north to northwesterly wind is expected. Wintry showers - often a mix of snow and hail even to low levels - most frequent around coasts in the west, north and perhaps east. A few bands of showers may advance into the Midlands from the north-west. Occasional sunshine away from showers. Chilly for all, max 3 to 6C, perhaps slightly higher in the far south-west.

Friday 02/02/18
Low confidence of detail by the end of the week. Pressure is likely to build from the west. Clearing skies overnight bring a risk of widespread frost. Many places may see a dry and bright day with sunny spells. Showers likely in the east, again wintry with snow or hail. Highs 3 to 7C.

Saturday 03/02/18
Winds may gradually turn back west or northwesterly by the weekend, allowing fronts to move back in from the Atlantic. Temperatures probably lifting a little, with some rain moving into western areas. Frost for some in the morning. Highs 4 to 8C.

Sunday 04/02/18
High pressure toward the south-west, and a general westerly flow looks likely. Fairly cloudy, with some rain or showers in the west & north-west. Drier and brighter toward the south and east. Highs 5 to 9C.
