Cool and mixed, severe gales early Thursday with snow risk in north

Staying chilly overall through the rest of the week and into the weekend. A deep area of low pressure brings severe gales and the threat of some snow to northern areas overnight into Thursday. Quieter for a time at the weekend with a risk of frosts before becoming mixed again next week. There is uncertainty as to how conditions develop from Tuesday onwards.

Friday 19/1/18
Low pressure to the north of Scotland on Friday. The west to northwest wind brings cold conditions and wintry showers to the north and west. A further accumulation of snow is likely in places, especially in Scotland, northwest England and Northern Ireland. Drier in the east and south with sunny spells. Highs at 2 to 5C.

Saturday 20/1/18
A ridge of high pressure builds through the UK and Ireland on Saturday bringing fair conditions and sunny spells. Thicker cloud and rain moves into the west as fronts edge eastwards and the winds increase. Highs at 2 to 6C.

 
 
 

Sunday 21/1/18
Fronts passing eastwards on Sunday taking rain with them. Following from the west later in the day will be a mix of sunny spells and showers, some heavy. Highs at 2 to 7C.

 
 
 

Monday 22/1/18
Much uncertainty in the detail for Monday. Low pressure is likely to be to the east with sunny spells and showers following. Tops around 2 to 7C.

Tuesday 23/1/18
Much uncertainty in how conditions develop through Tuesday. For now we expected a day of sunny spells and scattered showers with an area of low pressure centred north of Scotland. Most showers to the west, and these perhaps heavier in northern Scotland. Tops at 3 to 7C.

Wednesday 24/1/18
Low pressure may bring some rain through Ireland on Wednesday. The UK is expected to be mostly dry with some bright spells, although thicker cloud and some rain could affect western Scotland. Highs at 3 to 6C.
