Week ahead - June 24, 2020
Unsettled
Outbreaks of rain

Issued: 0900 Wednesday 24th June 2020
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Return of low pressure and more in the way of showery rain, with more persistent heavier rain at times, is forecast through the weekend and next week.

A fresher, more unsettled week ahead is expected, as a conveyor belt of low pressure systems move in from the Atlantic pushing any nudging area of ridging high pressure mostly away from the UK. There will be some drier conditions, these mainly in the south and east, but outbreaks of rain will be the theme for next week.

Saturday 27/6/20
With low pressure over the UK at the weekend, expect outbreaks of rain, some heavy at times, particularly across northern and western areas. The further south and east it will be drier with some sunny spells. Feeling fresher in the southwesterly wind. By evening a new area of low pressure pushes in from the Atlantic, forecast to bring rain to southern and central Ireland, Wales as well as southwest England. Highs at around 18C, warmer in the southeast at 24C.

Sunday 28/6/20
Another unsettled day. A fast moving area of low pressure tracking eastwards across southern England and Wales will bring wet conditions through the day, however, behind this a ridge of high pressure is forecast to build allowing for drier conditions to develop from the west. Further north and west it is forecast to remain unsettled with outbreaks of rain throughout the day. Breezy too with fresh winds expected in the west and feeling cool with highs around 16C. Highs around 17-20C further south.

Monday 29/6/20
The south is expected to stay largely dry and fine thanks to the ridging high pressure pushing up from France. Further north, there is some disagreement between models here, however the more likely scenario is that western parts of Scotland and Ireland will see some outbreaks rain as low pressure rains close by. Further east expect drier conditions but the chance of a cloudy day with the risk of some patchy rain, albeit mainly light, is possible. Slightly warmer than yesterday in the south with highs around 22C but cooler further north and west with highs around 16-18C.

Tuesday 30/6/20
Tuesday currently looks to see cloudy skies build across central England, much of Wales as well as Ireland and Northern Ireland. Outbreaks of rain will gradually push eastwards through the day. Further north and south it looks to stay drier with sunny spells expected as high pressure nudges up from the near continent as well as in from Scandinavia. Allowing to turn warm again in the south with highs at 25C and depending on where the cloud cover is over Ireland, the far south of Ireland could see 21C. Elsewhere, highs around 16-18C.

Wednesday 1/7/20
The UK is expected to sit under a trough on Wednesday and with this do expect some showery outbreaks of rain to develop. Currently, a heavier band of rain is forecast to affect southern parts of the UK but this should push eastwards rather quickly with drier conditions forecast behind. Winds are forecast to turn more northerly around the low pressure and temperatures will respond to this also with highs around a cooler 14-17C in the north. Warmer in the southeast corner at 21C and highs around 16-19C elsewhere.

Thursday 2/7/20
Another unsettled and somewhat cooler day is expected with showery outbreaks of rain in places as low pressure again dominates. A slight influence from high pressure over the near continent could see southern Britain stay largely dry. Highs around 16-20C. 21C in the southeast.
