Cooler, drier weekend
Stormy start

Issued: 0900 Monday 24th August 2020
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Severe gales at first, turning drier and cooler for the weekend with a risk of ground frosts

Low-pressure will be bringing a mixed week with severe gales expected on Tuesday. However they will be some dry days as well, with temperatures falling as we head into the weekend. By then higher pressure is likely to bring drier conditions with more sunshine, although overnight ground frosts are likely in sheltered areas.

Thursday 27/8/20
Rather cool and cloudy across Ireland and much of western England and Wales on Thursday as low-pressure brings some outbreaks of showery rain with it. It is likely to be drier across Scotland and eastern parts of England with some bright or sunny spells here. Most of the rain is likely across southern Ireland and perhaps Southwest England. Highs at 20C in southeast England, but more widely 15 to 17C for most.

Friday 28/8/20
An area of low pressure will pass eastwards through the UK on Friday. This brings periods of showery rain, some of them heavy across central and eastern England. Sunnier spells across Scotland and Ireland as well as northern England later. A cold night ahead with a touch of ground frost in sheltered western areas. Also feeling cool in the northerly wind at 14 to 17C.

Saturday 29/8/20
Low-pressure is to the east of the UK on Saturday with high-pressure building to the west of Ireland. A northerly flow will be bringing sunny spells, but also some showers to eastern Scotland and eastern England. Staying dry in the west. Feeling cool especially in the wind, and there will be a ground frost overnight in sheltered parts. Highs at 13 to 16C.

Sunday 30/8/20
A range of high-pressure will affect the whole of Ireland and the UK on Sunday. After a cold start the day will be bright and dry with some lengthy spells of sunshine. Feeling cool in the north-west breeze. Highs at 13 to 17C.

Monday 31/8/20
The ridge of high-pressure remains on Monday. This brings another fair day for many with further spells of sunshine, although cloud will increase across Ireland with rain here in the afternoon. Temperatures rising to a milder 15 to 19C after a cold start.

Tuesday 1/9/20
Probably a more mixed day on Tuesday as an area of low pressure drifts into the country. This brings cloud and some showery rain, especially to the west. Eastern areas may be drier. Tops at 14 to 19C.
