Wet and very mild, windy at times then briefly cooler next week

An unsettled week ahead as the jet stream impacts the weather over the British Isles. This brings rain and strong winds, as well as mostly mild conditions. There are hints of some cooler weather briefly developing next week perhaps bringing some snow on northern hills.

New Year's Eve 31/12/21
A showery area of rain passes through England and Wales on New Year's Eve. More persistent rain in central and eastern Scotland, some of it heavy. Drier weather arriving from the west as a weak ridge of high pressure builds. There wil always be plenty of cloud, but a few bright or sunny spells developing as the drier air arrives. A mild day with temperatures at 10C in northern Scotland, 15C in southern England.

New Year's Day 1/1/22
Low pressure northwest of Ireland on New Year's Day. This brings a very mild and breezy start to 2022. Periods of rain and drizzle in the west, the heaviest of it in western Scotland. Tending to be drier in the east. Highs at 12 to 14C.

Sunday 2/1/22
Low pressure dominates on Sunday. This brings periods of rain for many areas, possibly heavy at times as a further shallow area of low pressure quickly crosses the country. It is likely to be breezy too. Highs at a very mild 10 to 13C.

Monday 3/1/22
Another area of low pressure slipping into Scotland on Monday. This brings rain, some turning to sleet and snow over the hills. Sunny spells and scattered showers elsewhere, most of them in the west. Another breezy day. Highs at 4C in northern Scotland, 8C in southern England.

Tuesday 4/1/22
A colder day on Tuesday with low pressure east of the country and a northerly flow developing for all. This brings a mix of sunshine and showers, the showers falling as sleet and snow at times. Highs at 3 to 6C.

Wednesday 5/1/22
A ridge of high pressure builds on Wednesday bringing a dry and frosty start to the day. Cloud increasing from the west as a warm front moves in from the Atlantic bringing drizzle and rain in west snow over Scottish hills and the Pennines. Highs at 4C in the east, 11C in the west.
