Week ahead - December 05, 2021
Cool, rain and hill snow
Milder next weekend

Issued: 0900hrs Sunday 5th December 2021
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Unsettled through midweek

A deep area of low pressure moves in from the southwest early in the week to bring gales and heavy rain, plus hill snow. A generally cool and mixed weather pattern prevails through the week, then it is likely to turn milder during next weekend.

Wednesday 8/12/21
Low pressure influences the British Isles, centred toward the southwest. Areas of rain and some hill snow circulate across the country, persistent in some places, but locally escaping drier for periods, although much uncertainty about the extent of the heavier rain. Winds will also vary, in places up to gale force around some coasts, but others will see a lull in the strongest winds. Best chance for brighter or sunnier spells in western Scotland. Highs 4 to 9C.

Thursday 9/12/21
Low pressure will pull away southwards, leaving a quiet day for much of the country. Variable cloud, some residual drizzle or local showers, possible mistier areas in the morning which may be slow to improve. Some sunshine breaking through in places. A further front starts to encroach from the west later in the day, bringing rain to Ireland and western Scotland on strengthening southwesterly winds. Highs 4 to 8C.

Friday 10/12/21
A slack pressure pattern, generally low pressure over the country with areas of rain, sleet and snow - mostly over the hills in northern regions, but locally may fall lower down for a time. Light winds for many, but locally brisk northwesterly winds near western coasts where showers are likely, focused on west Wales, Cornwall and Devon. Mostly cloudy and rather dull. Highs 2 to 7C.

Saturday 11/12/21
A brief window of drier, quiet conditions for central and eastern regions, with cloud and areas of fog possible. Southwesterly winds strengthening are expected to bring rain to Ireland and western Scotland, perhaps more widely for western Britain, although becoming milder here. Highs 3 to 9C.

Sunday 12/12/21
Milder air is expected to make inroads across much of the country on southwesterly winds. Some patchy rain or drizzle and a lot of cloud. Highs 6 to 12C.

Monday 13/12/21
Mild southwesterly winds are likely into the start of next week. Some rain and drizzle, mainly in the north and west. Drier south and east. Highs 7 to 12C.
