Week ahead - September 25, 2017
Rain at times
Changeable start to October

Issued: 1000hrs Monday 25th September 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Risk of gales in the west

Low pressure to the west and high pressure to the east promotes a generally southerly airflow during this week, which will help temperatures climb above 20C in brighter areas, mainly in eastern Britain. Fronts pushing in from the west will give occasional rain, with a trend toward increasingly unsettled weather for the start of October. Windy at times, possible gales early next week.

Thursday 28/09/17
A slow-moving front is expected to lie north-west to south-east across the British Isles, although with some uncertainty about precise detail. Central, east & northern Britain is most likely to stay grey and damp, with some persistent rain possible. West & south-western areas should become brighter, with some sunshine trying to break through. Winds fairly light southerlies. Highs 14 to 18C.

Friday 29/09/17
Another frontal system moves in from the west, bringing rain to most places during the day, heaviest over the hills of south Wales & south-west England. Eastern regions should be dry for several hours, perhaps into the afternoon. Rain arrives for central areas. The far west may brighten up. Showers following into Ireland & the north-west. Breezy around western coasts. Highs 13 to 18C.

Saturday 30/09/17
A possible window in between weather systems. Rain from Friday should fade and clear eastwards, whilst the next Atlantic low is likely to bring rain and strenghtening winds to Ireland. A risk of rain developing for western Britain through the day. Lighter winds toward the east. Fairly cloudy overall. A little sunshine for central & southern regions. Highs 13 to 17C.

Sunday 01/10/17
Pressure is expected to fall across the country, and frontal rain is likely to spread from the south-west. Rain may extend to many areas, although some uncertainty about the eastward progress. Eastern Britain may escape dry. Possible gales in the south-west. Highs 13 to 17C.

Monday 02/10/17
Confidence low: Most likely an unsettled start to the week, with low pressure to the west of Britain, and high pressure over Scandinavia. Rain focused to the west & south-west. Strong southerly winds, possible gales. Temperatures 13 to 18C.

Tuesday 03/10/17
A likelihood of rain or showers affecting many places, with blustery south or south-westerly winds. Highs 12 to 17C.
