High pressure building; temperatures recovering

It will be an unsettled week ahead, with frequent rain and strong winds. Gales possible early on Wednesday, gusting 50-60mph in some areas. Heavy bursts of rain with hail and thunder possible. Conditions should improve into the weekend and beyond as pressure builds from the south-west. Becoming warmer into next week.

Thursday 14/09/17
A cool north-westerly pattern. Pulses of heavy showery rain spreading southwards, at times merging to constant rain around windward coasts in the north & west. Showers may also band together along North Sea coasts. Local hail and thunder. Snow on highest mountain tops in Scotland. Central & south-west England & Wales may escape driest for longest. Occasional sunshine. Blustery winds and squally gusts. Temperatures just 12 to 16C.

Friday 15/09/17
Pressure begins to build from the west, but a cool north or north-westerly airflow continues. Showers likely to affect eastern coastal districts, plus northern Scotland, perhaps locally frequent bursts with hail and thunder possible. Snow on mountain tops. Bands of showers too for some Irish Sea coasts, moving south into Cornwall & Devon. Central-southern England generally drier with sunny spells. Highs 11 to 16C.

Saturday 16/09/17
Confidence of detail is low. High pressure is expected to build from the south-west, resulting in a bright day for many places, with good spells of sunshine toward the south & south-west. A few areas of showers may continue, mainly around North Sea coasts, and perhaps in the far north-west. Winds easing, but staying on the cool side, highs 12 to 17C.

Sunday 17/09/17
High pressure focused to the south-west. Many areas fair, with some sunshine. However, a chance that fronts toppling across northern regions may bring outbreaks of rain to Scotland & northern England. Winds mostly light. Highs 12 to 18C.

Monday 18/09/17
Becoming warmer for most places as winds turn south-westerly. Largely dry with sunny spells. A chance of local residual showers. Winds may freshen in the north-west. Highs 14 to 20C, perhaps warmer.

Tuesday 19/09/17
High pressure should continue to influence the country, although detail very uncertain. Mainly dry. Chance of patchy rain in the north-west. Highs 14 to 21C.
