Heavy showers
Cool weekend

Issued: 1000hrs Tuesday 12th September 2017
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Warmer next week, some dry days

Heavy showers are forecast for the rest of this week and into the weekend as cool northerly winds affect the British Isles. Temperatures will be below average for mid-September. High pressure then builds slowly from the south-west, bringing drier and warmer weather into next week, but rain may return as the week goes on.

Friday 15/09/17
A cool north to north-westerly airflow influences Britain & Ireland. Showers draped around coasts in the west & north from before dawn. These will spread inland and break out increasingly widely through the day. Some heavy bursts with local hail and thunder possible. Sunny spells away from showers. Central & south-eastern England may escape often dry. Feeling cool, just 11 to 14C north, up to 16C south.

Saturday 16/09/17
Some uncertainty of detail, but a cool and showery pattern is likely to continue. A general northerly flow with low pressure centred to the east of Britain. Locally, rain may be very frequent as showers form into bands around coasts in the west & east, whilst inland where winds are lighter, showers may become slow-moving. Some places may escape commonly dry with sunshine. Highs 11 to 16C.

Sunday 17/09/17
Pressure is expected to build from the west, bringing a drier day to many places. Showers likely to become confined to eastern England, although these may be locally frequent around North Sea coasts. Sunshine widespread, and the air very clear. A fresh northerly breeze maintains a cool feel, just 12 to 17C.

Monday 18/09/17
High pressure centred toward the south-west of Britain. Fair weather for many, with good spells of sunshine. A few showers possible in the north & east, but well scattered and mostly light. A north-westerly breeze. A little warmer, 14 to 19C.

Tuesday 19/09/17
High pressure remains across southern regions, bringing dry and bright weather to much of England & Wales. A risk of weak fronts influencing northern areas, with cloud and patchy rain for the north-west. Warmer for all, 15 to 21C.

Wednesday 20/09/17
Confidence low, but a risk of rain developing more widely in the north & west as fronts push back in from the Atlantic. The south & south-east should remain drier, and fairly warm. South-westerly winds may freshen. Highs 13 to 20C.
