Showers west later

Issued: 0530hrs Monday 27th July 2020
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

A broad area of rain sweeps eastward over Ireland and the UK today with fresher northwesterly winds bringing brighter conditions and scattered showers into Ireland and western parts of the UK later.

Good Morning,

It's a wet start to the day for most on Monday as an area of low pressure brings rain, and the odd rumble of thunder, to Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales and much of England as well as southern and central parts of Scotland. This slowly shifts eastward through the morning with conditions brightening for Ireland, Northern Ireland and western Scotland though frequent showers will follow here for western coasts and hills in particular. Northwesterly winds also pick up to the west as the rain clears through. The far southeast of England may also escape dry through the morning.

Into the afternoon and the focus of the rain shifts to northern England and southern Scotland. There will also be further outbreaks of rain for Wales and the rest of England though these will tend to fade. Showers continue to affect northwestern parts of Ireland and Scotland though some spells of sunshine will develop here too and later over Wales and the western half of England as well. A freshening west to northwesterly breeze continues to pick up across the country too as the rain clears to showers.

Rain clears over the North Sea through Monday evening leaving a largely dry, bright and breezy end to the day for much of the UK and Ireland. Showers, however, will continue to plague northwestern coastal regions of Scotland and Ireland.

Have a good day!

Claire
