Unsettled & windy
Varying temperatures

Issued: 0900 Friday 29th December 2017
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

Wet and windy conditions, severe gales at times and a risk of heavy rain

With the jet stream over the UK in the coming days conditions are going to be staying windy and unsettled. Area of low pressure and fronts will be passing eastwards, taking areas of cloud, wind and rain with them. It may become cooler at times with snow showers in the north, although some milder days especially in the south. Rain could be heavy and there is a risk of some localised flooding in areas where the ground is already saturated.

New Year's Day 1/1/18
An area of low pressure passes over the south of the country on New Year's Day taking an area of potentially heavy rain with it. Heavy showers and longer periods of rain affecting northern and western Scotland with sleet and snow over high ground. A risk of severe gales in western Scotland, these spreading to Northern Ireland and northwest England later. A few showers in northwest England too. Eastern Scotland and northeast England will be drier and brighter. Drier for southern and eastern Ireland too. Highs at 3C in northern Scotland, 7C in southwest England.

Tuesday 2/1/18
A weak ridge of high pressure brings a fair start to the day. However, fronts will be pushing through Ireland with rain soon arriving from the Atlantic. Winds increasing later too. Highs at 6 to 11C.

Wednesday 3/1/18
Low pressure will be close to Scotland on Wednesday, a cooler west to northwest flow affecting many areas. There will be sunny spells for many. Showers affecting western coasts and hills. More persistent rain may affect parts of Scotland, this falling as snow on hills. A windy day for England, Wales and Ireland. Highs at 5 to 11C.

Thursday 4/1/18
A weak ridge of high pressure again brings some calmer weather at first on Thursday. However, further fronts move into the west during the day with rain accompanying them. This falling as snow in western and southern Scotland. Highs at 4 to 11C.

Friday 5/1/18
The area of low pressure looks likely to be crossing northern England on Friday. This brings a showery day, although some sunny spells in the south too. However, more persistent rain, sleet and eventually snow could trouble northern England and the northern half of Ireland as well as southern Scotland. Highs at 3 to 8C.

Saturday 6/1/18
Indications are that as the area of low pressure passes east, so colder air arrives for all. This brings a mix of sunny spells and wintry showers, most around coasts and hills. A colder day with highs at 2 to 6C.
