Turning colder
Often unsettled for many

Turning colder across many areas but increasingly unsettled

Increasingly colder across many areas through the next few days, perhaps milder later, but increasingly unsettled with a risk of rain, sleet and some snow, especially in the north

Boxing Day 24/12/17
A complex area of low pressure is expected across the British Isles on Boxing Day. This brings areas of cloud and rain across much of Ireland, England and Wales. The rain could be heavy and is likely to be turning to snow over the hills of northern Wales and northern England. Colder weather across Scotland with sunny spells and a scattering of wintry showers over the hills. A chilly day for all with highs of 2C to 6C. Overnight frost and icy patches possible.

Wednesday 27/12/17
A cold start with frost and some icy patches. Otherwise with the exception of some scattered wintry showers across parts of the north and east, it is likely to be mainly dry with some winter sunshine, but quickly becoming cold across inland areas during the evening. Rain may well reach the far south-west by the end of the day. Highs 2C to 5C.

Thursday 28/12/17
Wet weather moves into more southern and western areas through the day with sleet and snow on the leading edge, perhaps especially across Wales and parts of Central areas of England. Much of N England and Scotland likely to be mainly dry with some sunny spells and just a few wintry showers, still cold with overnight frost and ice. Highs 2C to 6C.

Friday 29/12/17
Low pressure is set to move into the British Isles off the N Atlantic through the day bringing increasingly wet and windy conditions with some heavy rain and this perhaps initially falling as sleet and snow across higher ground in the north. Wind, perhaps very windy in the west. A little milder. Highs 4C to 8C.

Saturday 30/12/17
Another windy day with low pressure passing through Scotland with high pressure to the south. Gales affecting many western areas with rain bands passing east during the day. Highs at 6C to 11C, so turning milder.

Sunday 31/12/17
Uncertainties, but low pressure to the west or north-west is likely to dominate with further rain and showers at times, especially in the north and west where they could be heavy and it will also likely be very windy across northern and western regions too. Mild, highs 6C to 12C, highest in the south and south-east.
