Often Unsettled
Varied temperatures

Remaining unsettled with spells of wet and windy weather

Very unsettled weather will dominate in the days ahead as low pressure dominates, temperatures varied but generally quite cold, especially in the north.

Tuesday 2/1/18
Turning wet and windy from the west through the day after a mainly dry start, perhaps with some frost in the north and east too. Wet and windy weather will, however, move north and east through the day perhaps with some temporary sleet and snow on northern hills. Highs 4C to 11C, highest in the south-west later in the day.

Wednesday 3/1/18
Low pressure will be close to Scotland on Wednesday bringing another very unsettled day and generally cooler, if not colder than compared with Tuesday. All areas will see a risk of rain or showers, especially in the north and west, perhaps wintry on hills. Noticeably it will be a very windy day with gales across northern and western areas in particular. Highs 4C to 8C.

Thursday 4/1/18
A weak ridge of high pressure again brings some calmer weather at first on Thursday. However, further fronts move into the west during the day with rain accompanying them. This falling as snow across northern hills in particular. Highs at 4C to 11C.

Friday 5/1/18
An area of low pressure looks set to move into the British Isles off the Atlantic through the day. This brings a showery day, although some sunny spells in the south too. However, more persistent rain, sleet and eventually snow could affect more northern and western areas through the day, it will also remain very windy with a fresh or strong, perhaps near gale force W or SW'ly wind. Highs at 3C to 8C.

Saturday 6/1/18
Indications are that as the area of low pressure passes east, so colder air arrives for all but considerable uncertainties over the details. This brings a mix of sunny spells and wintry showers, most around coasts and hills. A colder day with highs at 2C to 6C.

Sunday 7/18
Significant uncertainties, but it may well be that low pressure declines to the south or south-east of the British Isles as higher pressure builds to the north or north-east, allowing for the introduction of a cold, or perhaps very cold, N or NE'ly wind with subsequent wintry conditions developing quite widely. Highs 1C to 4C.
