A mixed week and col overall, becoming colder during New Year's Day

A mixed week ahead but one which does bring a fair amount of dry weather. There will be chilly days, but some milder ones too. New Year's Eve is looking increasingly wet in central and southern Scotland as well as the north and west of Ireland. Colder air then arrives from the north, draining south through New Year's Day with snow showers on northern hills. Chilly through he start of next week, then briefly milder before the cold returns again later.

New Year's Day
A cold front passes south on New Year's Day introducing much colder air from the north. Showers affecting much of Scotland with snow down to low levels here. A wet start to 2017 across northern England and much of Ireland as well as Wales, the Midlands and southwest England. Rain turns to snow over high ground as the morning progresses. Dry at first in southern England but the rain arriving here in the afternoon. Highs at 9C in southeast England, just 3C in central and northern Scotland.


Holiday Monday
On Monday a north to northwest wind brings some wintry showers to northern and eastern Scotland as well as eastern England. More western and southern areas will be drier with some good spells of sunshine, although there is a risk of the front lingering through southern England in the morning bringing further outbreaks of rain. Tops at 2 to 5C.
 


Tuesday 3/1/17
A chilly day on Tuesday with a brisk northwest wind bringing a few showers to the coasts of Scotland. High pressure affecting other areas allows for a fair day with some reasonable spells of sunshine, although there is a risk of some morning frost and fog patches over England, Wales and Ireland. Highs near 3 to 6C.
 


Wednesday 4/1/17
Chilly again on Wednesday with low pressure to the east and high pressure to the west. places are likely to be remaining dry throughout with sunny spells, although fog could again affect central and southern England and Wales. Highs at 4 to 8C.


Thursday 5/1/17
Hints of a more westerly flow trying to become established on Thursday. Fronts passing east bringing stronger winds and some rain, most in the north and west. Temperatures at 6 to 8C.

Friday 6/1/17
Things may turn chillier on Friday as high pressure builds to the west and low pressure sits t the east. The northerly flow brings a mix of sunshine and showers, most in the north and east where they could quickly turn to snow on the hills. Highs at 2 to 6C.
