Wet New Year Scotland
Drier to south

New Year's Eve
A rather cloudy start to the final day of 2016 for much of the UK and Ireland. Drizzle affects western coasts and hills and there could be some fog drifting onto the coasts too. There is a chance of some brightness in eastern parts of England and eastern Ireland this afternoon. Windier conditions affecting northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland as a front brings a wet morning to northern Scotland. This rain then slips south during the day to be into the whole of Scotland and Northern Ireland by evening. Colder weather follows into the far north of Scotland, turning the rain to snow over the hills. Highs at 6 to 9C.

New Year's Eve Night
A wet New Year's Eve for southern Scotland and Ireland as well as northern England as rain spreads southwards. Much colder in central and northern Scotland but drier here, although there will be some wintry showers setting in. Drier and windy for southern and central England and most of Wales although the rain reaches north Wales before midnight. Then turning wet through the Midlands, East Anglia and southwest England into the early hours as colder, drier air drains in behind the rain band. Watch for ice over much of northern England, Scotland and Ireland by morning. Lows at -2C in Scotland, 5C in southern England.

New Year's Day
Wet across much of East Anglia and southern England to start 2017 as a cold front clears southwards, the rain perhaps not clearing the far southeast until mid afternoon. Elsewhere it will be a much brighter but colder start to the New Year. Showers affecting northern and eastern Scotland and eastern England falling as snow on the hills and increasingly at low levels in Scotland and northeast England. A few showers over eastern Ireland and north Wales too. Highs at 1 to 6C.

Holiday Monday
Frost will be widespread and hard overnight into Monday morning. Highs pressure is expected to the west of Ireland. Some wintry showers affecting eastern parts of Scotland and England, although more western areas should be drier and brighter. The best of the sunshine in Wales and Ireland as well as southwest England. Highs near 3 to 5C.
