Issued: 0800 Monday 30th January 2017
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Mild and unsettled as the jet stream returns

An unsettled week ahead as the jet stream becomes dominant once again. This drives areas of low pressure across the Atlantic and forces their fronts into the UK and Ireland. Most of the rain will be in more western areas with less in the east. It is going to be windy at times with gales in the west. Temperatures are generally going to become milder through the week before turning cooler at the weekend.

Thursday 2/2/17
Low pressure west of Ireland on Thursday will push fronts eastwards. These bringing rain to much of Scotland, western England, Wales and Ireland. The far east of England tending to stay dry through the day, although with plenty of cloud and increasing winds. Gales may affect western areas with little change expected into the afternoon. Mild again with temperatures at 9 to 11C.

Friday 3/2/17
Low pressure dominates on Friday, the main area being northwest of Scotland. Rain crosses from west to east with some heavy bursts at times, mostly in Scotland and another area over Wales and perhaps southern England. Gusty winds associated with the rain. Turning brighter and showery from the west later in the day. Highs at a mild 7 to 11C but turning cooler later.

Saturday 4/2/17
Despite still being under the influence of low pressure, there may be a few hours on Saturday which are bright and dry for many. Some heavy bursts of rain clearing east early on. However, a further area of rain is likely to be following fro the west later although the arrivale time is uncertain. Highs at a cooler 5 to 9C.

Sunday 5/2/17
A cooler day for Sunday with low pressure close to Scotland bringing cloud and rain here. Brighter to the south with showers, some of them heavy in the west and perhaps turning increasingly wintry over the hill of Scotland, northern England and Wales. Temperatures at 4 to 7C.

Monday 6/2/17
A weak ridge of high pressure may give a reprieve on Monday as low pressure clears east. Perhaps drier for most with sunny spells, although because of the mobile nature of the weather at this time confidence is low. Highs at 7 to 10C.

Tuesday 7/2/17
Another area of low pressure is expected to be close to Ireland and western Scotland on Tuesday. This brings further strong winds to most with gales, possible severe, in the west. Rain in northern and western areas too, but tending to be drier in the southeast. Highs at 8 to 10C.
