Week ahead - January 16, 2017
Mostly dry
Turning cooler

Issued: 0800 Monday 16th January 2017
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Mostly dry as cooler air spread slowly west

A quiet week ahead across the UK and Ireland as high pressure builds. Cooler air to the southeast is likely to be slowly edging into all areas, replacing the current mild conditions to the north and west. Cloud amounts will vary although a tendency for cloud to break and any drizzle or patchy rain to fade from most areas as the week progresses. Some early signs of things turning mild next week.

Thursday 19/1/17
Pressure stays high on Thursday. The bits of the front stay across East Anglia and central England as well as Wales and southern Ireland. Plenty of cloud here with some drizzle on the hills. The southwest flow bringing some cloud and outbreaks of rain to northwest Scotland. Elsewhere coud is likely to be breaking with a few bright spells coming through. A cooler day for some, but temperatures generally around average at 5 to 8C.

Friday 20/1/17
High pressure centred over the UK and extending into Europe on Friday. There could be a fair amount of cloud around again across northern England and parts of Wales and Ireland. Probably brighter in more southern areas of England and Wales. Brighter spells to the north too with some low cloud and drizzle affecting western coasts of Ireland and northwest Scotland. Tops at a cooler 4 to 7C.

Saturday 21/1/17
High pressure stays to the east on Saturday. Skies probably become brighter with some spells of sunshine coming through. Cloudier skies to the west with bits of drizzle on coasts. A cooler day for all with highs at 2 to 5C after a widespread morning frost.

Sunday 22/1/17
High pressure centred over the UK on Sunday. Fronts affecting western Ireland and northwest Scotland giving some cloud and rain here. Elsewhere it is going to be staying mostly dry with broken cloud and sunny spells. Tops at 2 to 5C, perhaps 7C in western and southern Ireland.

Monday 23/1/17
Low pressure northwest of Scotland on Monday with higher pressure being squeezed away to the south. Fronts are going to try to pass east bringing cloud and rain through Ireland, Scotland and much of northern and western England and Wales. Perhaps drier in the east and south. Milder air arrives with the rain and the winds increase too. Highs at 4C in the east, 10C in the west.

Tuesday 24/1/17
A mild southwesterly flow over the UK and Ireland on Tuesday. This probably bringing periods of rain with it, most in the west and north of the UK. Tending to be drier further south although even here there could be some drizzle at times. Highs at 7 to 10C.
