Better by weekend

A slow-moving area of low pressure over northwestern Europe will bring a mix of showery conditions to Britain and Ireland into midweek. Hit and miss heavy downpours from day-to-day. Improving trends into the weekend and next week.

Wednesday 15/5/24
Low pressure centred toward the southwest brings easterly breezes. A belt of rain and low cloud for east and northeastern England. Patchy rain over southern areas developing into local heavy showers into the afternoon mainly affecting Wales, southwest England, plus southern Ireland. Mostly dry in the southeast, hazy sun. Much of Scotland looks dry, local showers in the south and west. Highs 15 to 20C.

Thursday 16/5/24
A slack pressure pattern over the British Isles. A risk of localised heavy showers forming by the afternoon and evening. Some thundery bursts in the south nearer to low pressure which will be focused over France. Some mist patches in the morning. Varied cloud and hazy sunshine. Mostly light winds. Highs 16 to 19C, locally cooler in the northeast if haar rolls in off the North Sea.

Friday 17/5/24
Low pressure stays over the near-continent. A mix of bright spells and heavy showers in the forecast, risk of locally thundery bursts later in the day in southwestern areas. East to northeasterly breezes. Cool in northeast, feeling warm in any sun inland. Highs 17 to 21C.
 

Saturday 18/5/24
Pressure may build a little from the west. Still a risk of scattered showers. Pleasantly warm with sunny spells. Highs 17 to 21C.

Sunday 19/5/24
A ridge of high pressure expands from the southwest. Fine and warm for many. Patchy rain may reach western Scotland. Light northwest breeze. Highs 17 to 23C.

Monday 20/5/24
High pressure suggested to build over the British Isles. Fine conditions with sunny spells and rare showers. Highs 17 to 23C.
