Issued: 0530hrs Wednesday 1st May 2024
Duty forecaster: Andy Chaloner

Rain fringes the North Sea coast, but mostly fine in northwest

A mostly dry and bright start to the day, with rain fringing northeast England and southeast Scotland, pushing northwards during the afternoon. A largely dry and fair start across western Scotland and much of England and Wales, with higher level cloud lifting to bring sunny spells for many.

During the afternoon a few showers will develop in the south, affecting southwest England, south Wales and the Midlands. Elsewhere mostly dry with lengthy sunny spells, apart from northeast England where a fragmenting rain band brings low cloud and light rain. Highs of 12-16C north to south.

Overnight a more organised band of rain and showers moves northwards across southwestern parts, with a few rumbles of thunder, but largely dry and clear elsewhere. Lows of 6C in northern Scotland, 11C in the south.
