Issued: 0900 Sunday 13th December 2020
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Unsettled weather with strengthening winds and heavy rain. Drier interludes. Staying mild.

A rather unsettled week and weekend of weather coming up with some complex areas of low pressure moving in creating heavy rainfall and strengthening winds. Milder air sticks around throughout for southern areas and moves into northern areas at times.

Wednesday 16/12/20
Low pressure arrives from the southwest on Wednesday bringing strong winds, possibly coastal gales, and outbreaks of rain to many. Heaviest of the rainfall currently looks to affect Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland, but this is determined by the exact track of the low pressure which is still somewhat uncertain. Brighter conditions follow behind the rain. A relatively mild day, particularly in thr far south with highs between 7 to 11C.

Thursday 17/12/20
It will be a mainly dry and bright day on Thursday but with some scattered showers in far western areas. Through the afternoon patchy rain will spread across Ireland, Northern Ireland and western parts of the rest of the UK by evening. Another relatively milder day with highs between at 8 to 11 or 12C.

Friday 18/12/20
Again, there is some uncertainty in the detail, but rain moves east over Ireland and into western parts of the UK on Friday. Perhaps staying dry across many eastern areas until later. Rain does look to turn heavy in the west. Southerly winds strengthen too. A mild day for many with temperatures between 9 and 12 or even 13C.

Saturday 19/12/20
A complex weather situation occurs at the weekend where there are a couple low pressure sentrs to the north and northwest of the UK. Currently, it looks likely wettest conditions with showers or longer spells of rain will affect western and northern areas mainly while eastern areas stay largely dry. Although by the afternoon eastern areas could see rain push across. A cooler day across the north and west with highs here at 7C. Staying mild in the south and southeast with highs here at 11 or 12C.

Sunday 20/12/20
Much uncertainty in the forecast but there could be some heavy rain to far southern areas through the morning as a wave passes through here. However, other than this high pressure looks to ridge in from the west allowing for any showers elsewhere to gradually fizzle out. A cooler day for all. Highs at 5 to 9C.

Monday 21/12/20
The next Atlantic low pressure system moves in seeing rain spread from west to east with strengthening winds once again, still from a southwesterly direction so not particularly cold. Highs at 6C to 10C.
