Issued: 0900 Sunday 11th December 2022
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Very cold with some snow showers, possibly wet, windy and milder later

Very cold weather continues for much of this week. There will be some snow showers and these will give a covering in some areas. For the vast majority of places it stays dry with broken cloud and a few sunny spells. By the end of the forecast we may see strong winds, milder weaher and heavy rain, preceded by snow, sweeping in from the west.

Wednesday 14/12/22
Further snow showers in northern Scotland on Wednesday, a few of them affecting eastern coasts. Cloudier in the far south of England and the chance of some sleet along the far south coast. Most other areas stay very cold with some freezing fog patches. These clearing to leave sunny spells. Highs at -1 to 1C, although to 6C in the far southwest.

Thursday 15/12/22
Northerly winds are likely to prevail. Snow showers affecting districts exposed to the wind, focused on northern Scotland, but also draped down coasts near the Irish Sea and perhaps some skirting eastern England. Mainly dry for central and southern counties. Remaining cold with a severe frost. Highs 0 to 3C.

Friday 16/12/22
Staying cold with indications of an area of low pressure moving into northern Scotland, perhaps bringing some more persistent snow here. There will be snow showers in Ireland too. Drier for other areas, staying cold with some sunny spells, but always the risk of a snow shower in the west. Highs at 1 to 4C.

Saturday 17/12/22
Staying cold, although perhaps becoming rather misty and murky with a fair amount of cloud. Drizzly sleet may affect southern coasts. Cloud breaks to allow some bright or sunny spells. Cold in Scotland, some snow showers in the north and west. Highs at 2 to 4C.

Sunday 18/12/22
Very uncertain, a risk of rain, sleet and snow pushing in from the southwest, perhaps a rise of temperature more widely, but the north and northeast more likely to stay cold. Highs 2 to 6C.

Monday 19/12/22
Rain in eastern areas through Monday. A windy day too with heavy showers following to the west. Some sunny spells between the showers. Milder at 8 to 11C.
