Very cold & windy weekend
Wintry showers

Issued: 0900 Wednesday 24th November 2021
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

A very cold weekend with wind and wintry showers, most persistent in the east

A cold weekend ahead with a first taste of winter for many of us. There will be some snow on hills, especially in the north and east. Strong winds here too, a risk of gales and this will bring blizzards over the hills of Scotland. Tending to become less cool next week, perhaps milder in the middle of the week.

Saturday 27/11/21
Low pressure remains in the North Sea on Saturday. This brings a very cold and strong northwest wind across the country. There will be periods of rain and sleet in eastern areas, wet snow here at times and snow on the hills in the east of Scotland and England too. Some wintry showers affecting western parts of Wales and southwest England, again falling as snow on high ground. Ireland stays windy and cold with some wintry showers north and west but dry for most. Highs at 2 to 5C.

Sunday 28/11/21
Wintry showers continuing to affect eastern coasts through Sunday, although these tending to fade. Sunny spells and mostly dry in the east as well. More cloud in western areas with rain spreading east through Ireland, reaching western Wales and western Irland as well as southwest England later. Cold in the east at 2 to 5C, 7C in the west.

Monday 29/11/21
A slack pressure flow on Monday. There will be plenty of cloud through the day for most places. Outbreaks of rain in Scotland, drizzle affecting western coasts and hills. Drier in the east and south. Highs at 4 to 8C.

Tuesday 30/11/21
Higher pressure to the south with low pressure to the north. A westerly flow through the UK and Ireland. Some rain in northern and western Scotland. Spots of drizzle on western coasts and hills. Dry for most, although rather cloudy. Highs at 8 to 11C.

Wednesday 1/12/21
A front moves southeast through all areas taking a band of showery rain with it. Following will be a mix of bright or sunny spells and showers. A breezy day. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Thursday 2/12/21
A chilly northwesterly wind afecting alla reas. There will be sunny spells and scattered showers, most around northern and western coasts and hills. Brighter and drier in the east and south. Lows at 4 to 7C.
