Atlantic milder, wetter and windier weather from Sunday

The bitterly cold grip continues with some snow expected across the north on Friday. The weekend sees an Atlantic transition with milder yet wetter and windier weather moving in. Snow preceding rain for many on Sunday. A brief very mild stint early next week before temperatures fall back again to feeling cold, perhaps though not as cold, later in the week.

Sunday 18/12/22
Increasing winds on Sunday, becoming gale force in the west which will make many areas still feel cold. Milder temperatures though progressively move in along with heavy rain, preceded by snow, moves from west to east. Highs by evening at 5 or 6C in the east, 12 or 13C in the west.
 


Monday 19/12/22
Low pressure to the west of Scotland on Monday. A strong southwest wind with gales at times in the west and south. Persistent spells of rain across southern England with flooding becoming an increased risk here. Frequent showers, some merging into longer spells of rain across Wales, NW England and north and west Scotland. Drier and brighter further east. A significantly milder day for all with highs at 10 to 14C.

Tuesday 20/12/22
Staying windy on Tuesday with no frost expected overnight. Gales persisting in the north. Some blustery showers affecting western coasts and hills, dry for most. Rain gradually clearing SE England. A cooler day with the precipitation falling as snow over higher ground in the north, though temperatures still at a relatively mild Highs at 7 to 12C.

Wednesday 21/12/22
A northwesterly flow through the country on Wednesday. Feeling cold in the brisk wind. Some places seeing a touch of frost first thing. Precipitation moving in increasingly as snow to northern Scotland where winds will strengthen. Rain showers down Irish Sea coasts, falling as sleet and snow over the higher ground. Dry with sunshine elsehwere. Highs at a cooler 4 to 8C.

Thursday 22/12/22
Low pressure sits to the north of Scotland on Thursday. An even colder northwesterly wind may just pull back in again. Any showers will fall as sleet and snow even back down to lower levels in the north. Most places staying dry with sunshine, though freezing fog and a hard frost could cause some problems first thing. Highs at 3 to 7C.

Friday 23/12/22
A potential widespread frost into Friday with many southern areas seeing the risk of freezing fog though it currently looks to be a dry day for most here. Snow showers hit parts of Scotland again as an area of low pressure moves south into the North Sea. Windy here too. Highs at a cold 1 to 5C with some places struggling to reach above freezing.
