Staying unsettled and changeable

Weather looks unsettled between Christmas and New Year giving at times heavy rain, blustery winds with gale force strengths expected on some days. Generally cooler further north but a relatively milder flow further south.

Tuesday 27/12/22
A cold start to Tuesday with perhaps some frost about, though many in the north and west are likely to wake to a wet Tuesday as outbreaks of rain will be pushing in from the west along with brisk and blustery winds. Rain likely to fall as snow over higher ground in the north, perhaps wintry to lower levels for some for a time. Much of central and southern England starting dry before rain moves in, albeit turning patchy, as the day progresses. Highs soon rising to at 6 to 11C.


Wednesday 28/12/22
A chilly start again to Wednesday. Dry initially for most before rain pushes up from the southwest, falling heavy and persistent for some particularly across western areas including Ireland, with strengthening southerly winds. NE England and much of Scotland staying mostly dry until the afternoon when rain is expected to clear much of Wales and SW England though staying blustery. Highs at 5 to 10C.

Thursday 29/12/22
Staying windy into Thursday. Scotland seesing a mix of rain, sleet and snow, snow mainly towards the higher ground. Blustery showers on to other western coasts and hills across the UK and Ireland, while elsewhere should stay largely dry and fine. Winds tending to ease back through the day. Highs at 5 to 10C.

Friday 30/12/22
Friday sees a frosty start to Scotland and a dry and fine yet chilly day expected here. Further south a frontal system yet again brings outbreaks of rain moving in from the Atlantic with strengthening winds. Highs at 7 to 12C.

New Years Eve 31/12/22
Hogmanay starting off largely dry though not for long as the next frontal system with rain moves in from the west, although much of southern England looking to remain mostly dry and particularly mild with highs here up to 13C. Chillier elsewhere with highs here 4 to 7C.

New Years Day 1/1/23
A less windy day for the start of the new year. Dry in the north though some mist and fog is to be expected. Spells of persistent rain affect much of England and Wales. Highs at 6 to 10C.
