Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Some milder days ahead but turning colder later

Mixed to unsettled weather ahead with rain, heavy at times, and strong to gale force winds on some days. High pressure does always stay close by so there will be some drier periods. The north will get colder from mid-week with some frosty mornings expected as well as some snow over the hills.

Wednesday 18/11/20
Another windy day on Wednesday and feeling cooler for all. A band of rain spreads from west to east across the British Isles with brighter conditions following later for Ireland and western parts of the UK though there will still be scope for blustery showers here. Rain clears the far southeast of England through the evening as another band of rain arrives over western Ireland. High temperatures at 8 or 9C across Ireland and Northern Ireland; 11 to 14C for England, Wales and Scotland.

Thursday 19/11/20
A much colder northwest to northerly flow develops across the UK and Ireland as low pressure moves to the east. Patchy outbreaks of rain and showers move southeastward across the country. These will fall as sleet and snow over higher ground in Scotland. There will be good spells of sunshine between the showers and winds will gradually ease from the west. Cloud builds and rain arrives over southern Ireland and the southwest UK through the evening. High temperatures at 4 to 11C.

Friday 20/11/20
A frosty but dry and bright start for much of the UK on Friday. Cloudier but slightly milder over Ireland. A few showers linger over eastern coasts of England and Scotland but otherwise a dry, cold and sunny day for the UK. A cloudy and wet start for Ireland. Rain makes its way into western parts of the UK through the day. This falls as snow over the Scottish mountains. Staying dry for eastern England and Scotland. Highs at 3 to 9C across Scotland as well as much of England and Wales; 9 to 12C for Ireland, Northern Ireland and the far southwest UK.

Saturday 21/11/20
High pressure gets squeezed to the southeast on Saturday as low pressure sends a band of rain across Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and much of England through the day. This will fall as snow over higher ground in Scotland. Rain spreads into southeastern England through the evening. Brighter conditions with blustery showers follow from the northwest behind the rain. Highs at 6 to 10C for Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the north of England; 11 to 14C across the rest of England and Wales.

Sunday 22/11/20
Rain clears southeastern England through Sunday morning to leave a mostly bright day across the UK and Ireland. Scattered blustery showers will affect western coasts and hills. Again, these will fall as sleet and snow over higher ground in Scotland. Highs range from 5 to 10C.

Monday 23/11/20
Early indications are that Monday will be a mostly dry day for the UK and Ireland with high pressure to the southeast. There will be some cloud around to the north and west and patchy light rain may affect northwestern coastal parts of Ireland and Scotland. The best of the sun to the southeast. Highs at a chilly 6 to 9C.
