Mild initially and rather unsettled but then turning colder over Christmas
Staying quite mild and rather unsettled through the weekend and into the start of next week. Cooler temperatures moving into northern areas intitally then spreading across the country through midweek and into next weekened. Outbreaks of rain will become fewer and further between while wintry showers of sleet and snow could become widespread by next weekend.

Tuesday 22/12/20 An area of low pressure will track across southern Ireland, central and southern England and Wales on Tuesday. This brings the threat of some heavy rain to the south though most of the rain elsewhere will be light and patchy. Brighter and colder for Northern Ireland and Scotland as well as the far north of England with some showers affecting western coasts and hills. Highs at 10 or 11C in the far south of England, 4 to 7C for most elsewhere.
Wednesday 23/12/20 Another area of low pressure crosses Ireland, England and Wales on Wednesday bringing unsettled conditions for many. It will bring cloud and rain across southern areas with a risk of some sleet and snow over the hills of Wales and northern England. Rain may be particularly heavy again for the far south. Brighter but cold with wintry showers across Scotland while conditions improve across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Highs at 2 to 7C.
Christmas Eve 24/12/20 Rain and sleet clear the far south of England on Christmas Eve morning while colder air spreads across the UK and Ireland. Scattered showers affect eastern parts of England and Scotland and coastal areas around the Irish Sea though it will be a dry and bright day for most. Cloud builds to the northwest later. High temperatures at 2 to 7C.
Christmas Day 25/12/20 A dry, cold and fine start to the day for many though there will be some cloud around to the northwest. Isolated showers affect northwestern areas at times. Cloud spreads across the region confining the best of the sunshine to the southeast of England. More persistent rain arrives to the northwest through the evening. Highs at 4 to 7C.
Boxing Day 26/12/20 Winds pick up across the country on Boxing Day while outbreaks of rain become heavier and more persistent over Scotland and Northern Ireland. Some patchy rain spreads into northern parts of England and Ireland but many southern areas stay dry and fair. Highs of 4 to 8C.
Sunday 27/12/20 A wet day for southern areas as Saturday's rain spreads over England, Ireland and Wales. Cooler and brighter for Scotland and Northern Ireland with frequent wintry showers here. Rain clears the south by the evening and wintry showers arrive here too. Highs of 2 to 5C.
