Severe gales

Much of this week is looking quite unsettled with plenty of rain and showers. Colder across northern Scotland with a risk of wintry showers and snow at times. Across England and Wales temperatures are expected to be well above normal. There is the potential for strong winds later on Wednesday into early Thursday as deep low pressure crosses Britain. Detail on this low at present and subject to change.

Wednesday 23/11/17
Very mild with well above normal temperatures but colder for Scotland. Increasingly windy with gales developing. A band of heavy rain will track up through England into Scotland, this may be preceded by snow over the Highlands. A mild, wet and windy night across Britain. Wind gusts to 70 mph may affect western coasts and the channel coasts with gusts 50 mph possible in the evening and night. Expect highs of 7 to 16C.

Thursday 23/11/17
The strong winds lessen but still a windy and mild day for England and Wales. Mostly cloudy with scattered showers, these mostly in the north and the west. Colder for Scotland with wintry showers over the hills. Further rain and showers to come overnight with snow perhaps down to lower levels across northern Scotland. Very windy. Expect highs of 7 to 15C.

Friday 24/11/17
It stays cold across Scotland and mild across much of England and Wales. Very windy with heavy rain clearing to leave showers in the west and the east dry. Showers will be wintry for northern Scotland. Gales may affect the south overnight with heavy rain across England and Wales, low confidence in the detail. Look for highs of 6 to 15C.

Saturday 25/11/17
Colder and very windy with gales in the south, again confidence is low. As deep low pressure moves east, outbreaks of heavy rain may turn briefly to snow, this over high ground in the south. Expect highs of 4 to 8C.
