Mixed with sunshine and showers, hints of cooler weather by Christmas

A mixed week ahead with periods of rain and showers. These could be heavy at times, especially in the west. Temperatures generally around average for the time of year, milder in the south. Tending to turn cooler by the end of the forecast with hints of some Christmas frost.

Friday 18/12/20
Low pressure west of Ireland on Friday. Fronts will be edging east bringing rain across northern and western areas, heaviest over the hills of Wales, southwest England and southwest Scotland. The rain continues in the afternoon for most, again most of it heavy in the west. East Anglia and southeast England are likely to be drier, although there could be some drizzle here later. Becoming drier and brighter in Ireland, sunny spells and scattered showers here. Tops at 9 to 12C.

Saturday 19/11/20
A cold front clearing away from southeast England. Brighter weather will be following from the west bringing a mix of sunshine and scattered showers. Most of the showers affecting western coasts and hills, especially in western Scotland. Temperatures at 7 to 12C becoming cooler later.
 

Sunday 20/12/20
A day of sunny spells and scattered showers on Sunday. The showers are most likely in western and southern areas. Central and eastern parts are drier with the best of the sunny spells here. Temperatures around or just above average at 7 to 10C.

Monday 21/12/20
Low pressure develops both north and south of the UK and Ireland on Monday. This brings rain to the north of Scotland, although drier in the east. A further area of rain crosses southern Ireland, Wales and England, the rain heavy in the south. Note that confidence is low in the rain in the south. Highs feeling cooler for many at 5 to 9C.

Tuesday 22/12/20
Lower pressure brings more unsettled weather through Tuesday, clearing eastwards to showers. The showers heavy in the north and west and turning cooler in Scotland later. Highs at 4 to 8C.

Wednesday 23/12/20
Low pressure is in the North Se on Wednesday. This introduces cooler air to all areas, colder in Scotland. Heavy showers or longer spells of rain in northern and eastern areas. The rain turning to sleet and snow over hills in the north. Highs at 5 to 8C.
