Unsettled

Issued: 0900 Saturday 12th December 2020
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Unsettled yet milder for some. Some heavy rain and strong winds at times.

An unsettled week and weekend ahead as Atlantic low pressure pushes across all areas bringing heavy rain and strong winds at times. Temperatures will feel milder too, especially in the south.

Tuesday 15/12/20
With low pressure to the west of the UK, expect showers to affect western areas but it should stay largely dry further east. A wave pushing in on Monday night across southern and southeastern areas of England will bring rain here first thing before soon clearing. Cloud will thicken across southern Ireland, Wales and southwest England later on in the day as an area of low pressure pushes through the Celtic Sea. Highs at 6 to 11C.

Wednesday 16/12/20
Low pressure arrives from the southwest on Wednesday bringing strong winds, possibly coastal gales, and outbreaks of rain to many. This may be locally heavy and turn to snow over higher ground. Brighter conditions follow behind the rain. The far north and northwest of Scotland currently look to stay dry although the exact track of the low pressure is still uncertain. Cooler in the north today but staying relatively mild in the south. Highs at 4 to 11C.

Thursday 17/12/20
It will be a mainly dry and bright day on Thursday but with some scattered showers in far western areas. Through the afternoon patchy rain will spread across Ireland, Northern Ireland and western parts of Britain later on. Highs at 6 to 11C.

Friday 18/12/20
Again, there is some uncertainty in the detail, but rain moves east over Ireland and into western parts of the UK on Friday. Perhaps staying dry across many eastern areas until later. Rain does look to turn heavy in the west. A mild day for many with temperatures between 7 and 11C.

Saturday 19/12/20
Rain clears eastern areas first thing to allow for a dry day for many eastern areas in particular on Saturday. More rain, however, will push into western areas through the afternoon. Highs at 5 to 10C.

Sunday 20/12/20
Much uncertainty in the forecast but there could be some heavy rain to southern areas at times as an area of low pressure passes from west to east here. Northern areas currently also look to see rain as a separate front passes across. Highs at 5 to 10C.
