Very cold, some sunshine, then milder, wetter and widy from Sunday

Staying very cold for much of this week. There will be some sunshine developing, the best of it in more northern areas. Snow showers around northern coasts of Scotland. Overnight frosts will be severe. Milder, wetter and windier weather arriving on Sunday but it may take until Monday for it to arrive in all areas.

Thursday 15/12/22
The northerly wind brings snow showers into northern Scotland. A few snow showers could affect northern coasts of Northern Ireland and west Wales too. A widespread severe frost with some morning mist and freezing fog patches. These clearing to leave the day dry with lengthy spells of sunshine in most areas away from northern coasts and hills. Highs at 0 to 2C.
 

Friday 16/12/22
Northerly winds are likely to prevail. Snow showers affecting districts exposed to the wind, focused on northern Scotland, but also draped down coasts near the Irish Sea and perhaps some skirting eastern England. Mainly dry for central and southern counties. Remaining cold with a severe frost. Highs 0 to 3C.

Saturday 17/12/22
Cold again on Saturday although the winds turn more to the south. This may encourage some more widespread misty, murky conditions to develop. The best of any brightness in the east. Drizzle may affect western coasts and hills with some rain in western Ireland. Highs at 0 to 2C, but 2 to 4C in southwest England and 4 or 5C in Ireland.

Sunday 18/12/22
Rain and gales arrive in the west of the UK and through Ireland on Sunday. The rain may be heavy and could be preceded by snow as it passes east. Eastern areas staying cold but becoming increasingly murky, with the mist and murk also in the west where temperatures rise. Highs at 2C in Scotland and eastern England, becoming 8 to 11C in the west and south.

Monday 19/12/22
Low pressure south of Iceland on Monday. Fronts brings rain to eastern Scotland and the south and east of England, some of it heavy, as well as strong winds. Briefly brighter in the west ahead of heavy showers or longer spells of rain, most ion Ireland and western Scotland. Tops near 10 to 13C.

Tuesday 20/12/22
Milder and drier for Tuesday. Sunny spells and dry. Showers north and west of Scotland, some broken cloud in the west. Drier and brighter east. Highs at 6 to 9C.
