Mild and unsettled
Cooler next week

Issued: 0930 Monday 14th December 2020
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Mild yet wet and breezy through the week and weekend. Cooler next week.

Unsettled weather this week yet a mild feel as a southerly flow continues, particularly on Friday. There will be spells of rain, heaviest in the west mainly, but also showers, these mainly affecting western areas. Brief ridges of high pressure at times. Strengthening winds at times too.

Thursday 17/12/20
Trailing fronts bringing rain to the far south, central areas of England including Wales, as well as north and west Scotland, will continue in the morning but should fizzle out through the afternoon as a ridge builds. However, cloud will thicken across western Ireland later on as rain pushes in here spreading across Ireland and Northern Ireland by evening. Another relatively milder day with highs between at 8 to 11 or 12C.

Friday 18/12/20
A wet day on Friday and breezy but it could be the mildest day of the week. Rain spreads eastwards through the morning. Heavy rain pushes into western areas in the afternoon, clearing Ireland and Northern Ireland in the afternoon with blustery showers behind. Highs between 10 to 13C quite widely with cooler air across northwest Scotland with highs here at 6C.

Saturday 19/12/20
A broad area of low pressure circulates to the west of Scotland at the weekend. Rain should clear first thing on Saturday across eastern areas. Showers affecting western areas, breezy too across these parts. Drier further east. A cooler day across the north and west with highs here at 7C. Staying mild in the south and southeast with highs here at 11C.

Sunday 20/12/20
A largely dry day on Sunday although showers will continue in the west. Showers turning to longer spells of rain across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, closer to the centre of low pressure. A cooler day for all. Highs at 5 to 9C.

Monday 21/12/20
The area of low pressure to the west of Scotland will continue to fill and track across the country. This will bring showers or longer spells of rain to the north and west of Scotland. Meanwhile, a separate area of low pressure will push eastwards across southern Ireland, Wales and southern England. Drier across the rest of Ireland and northern England as well as eastern areas of Scotland. Highs at 6C to 10C.

Tuesday 22/12/20
Currently, rain will still affect southern areas on Tuesday but it looks drier further north. Looking more likely too that it will turn cooler in the far north. Highs at 5C to 10C.
