Week ahead - December 10, 2022
Hard frosts
Local snow showers

Issued: 0900 Saturday 10th December 2022
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Perhaps less cold by next weekend

Cold and frosty conditions will persist during the week ahead. Many places often dry, but some snow showers locally, feeding inland from coasts on northerly winds. Later in the week, a complicated situation may develop as low pressure approaches from the southwest, bringing scope for a snow and rain mix.

Tuesday 13/12/22
Staying very cold across the country, with hard frost following very low overnight temperatures, especially in northern areas. Snow showers and flurries focused on eastern Scotland and northeast England. Areas of freezing fog for central & northern England and Wales. A brisk easterly wind in the south will feel bitter. Possibly some sleet or hill snow pushing into southwestern areas, rain near to coasts. Temperatures staying near or below freezing in the north, 2 to 5C south.

Wednesday 14/12/22
The winds turning more northerly driving showers further across north and northeastern regions, widely falling as sleet or snow. Possibly a few showers over the Irish Sea clipping west Wales. Largely dry for central and southern areas with sunshine but staying cold. Highs 0 to 3C.

Thursday 15/12/22
Northerly winds are likely to prevail. Snow showers affecting districts exposed to the wind, focused on northern Scotland, but also draped down coasts near the Irish Sea and perhaps some skirting eastern England. Mainly dry for central and southern counties. Remaining cold with a severe frost. Highs 0 to 3C.

Friday 16/12/22
Confidence becomes lower, but it stays very cold for all with another widespread frost. Areas of snow showers spreading from the north. Some freezing fog patches if winds fall light in central regions. Highs 0 to 3C.

Saturday 17/12/22
A few snow showers, but many places dry with some freezing fog. Low pressure may encroach into the southwest where temperatures may lift a little if winds increase here. Highs 0 to 5C.

Sunday 18/12/22
Very uncertain, a risk of rain, sleet and snow pushing in from the southwest, perhaps a rise of temperature more widely, but the north and northeast more likely to stay cold. Highs 2 to 6C.
