Issued: 0900 Wednesday 7th December 2022
Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Cold, wintry days with widespread frosty nights

Feeling cold, particularly when exposed to any wind. Widespread and severe overnight frosts while daytime temperatures only a degree or so above freezing for many areas. Snow showers are likely around many western, northern and eastern coasts, with some moving more inland at times.

Saturday 10/12/22
The low pressure remains to the east of the UK on Saturday. A widespread and severe frost on Saturday morning. Further wintry showers rotating around the low pressure pushing on to eastern coasts of Scotland and England. Snow showers also expected across northern and western Ireland as well as north and west Wales. Mostly dry with sunny spells elsewhere. Highs at 2 to 4C.

Sunday 11/12/22
Low pressure stays to the east on Sunday. Again the risk of some wintry showers down coasts as well as frequent and some heavy snow showers across northern Scotland where a wind could pick up. Elsewhere dry with sunny spells. A widespread and severe early frost. Highs at 2 to 4C but perhaps 6C in the far southwest.

Monday 12/11/22
Another cold day on Monday. Perhaps a higher risk of more persistent snow across Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland. Wintry showers continue to affect many coasts elsewhere while most inland across England and Wales will stay dry. Highs at just 2 to 4C but 7C in the far southwest.

Tuesday 13/12/22
Another cold day with a hard frost early on. A front pushes northwards across the Channel and could bring some rain, possible sleet and snow, to southern Ireland, southwest England and south Wales. Strengthened winds too. Wintry showers affedcting northeast Scotland, though largely dry elsewhere with sunny spells. Highs at 1C in Scotland, 3C in southern England.

Wednesday 14/12/22
A possible unsettled day with low pressure just to the south of England. Strengthened winds with a mix of rain, sleet and snow across more regions today making it feel bitterly cold for many. Highs at 1 to 4C.

Thursday 15/12/22
A northerly wind may return come Thursday with wintry showers again affecting northern regions of Scotland and down North Sea and Irish Sea coasts. Drier and brighter inland. Highs at 1 to 4C though SW England may see 6C.
