A windy weekend

Issued: 0900 Friday 8th February 2018
Duty forecaster: Dr. Simon Keeling

A winy weekend, then becoming drier and milder next week

An unsettled weekend with severe gales in places. There will be wintry showers on the hills, with the risk of sleet and snow over hills in the south. Becoming drier and milder for most next week as pressure builds, although always the risk of some low cloud and drizzle in the west.

Monday 11/2/19
A chilly start to Monday morning. There may be a few showers around eastern coasts, but overall it should be dry as a ridge of high pressure builds. This brings a fair amount of sunshine with it. Most areas stay dry through the day. Increased cloud in the west of Ireland and western Scotland later. Highs at 3C in northern Scotland, 8C in southern England.

Tuesday 12/2/19
High pressure recedes over the southern UK on Tuesday allowing fronts to affect the whole of Ireland and Scotland. These fronts will bring light but persistent rain to western areas and high winds in northern Scotland. A fair day for much of England and Wales, but low cloud and drizzle could reach northern England and parts of Wales. Highs at 6 to 10C.

Wednesday 13/2/19
A weak front may bring some cloud and outbreaks of light rain or drizzle through England and Wales on Wednesday before high pressure builds once more. Rather misty too. The drizzle affecting much of Ireland, southern and western Scotland. Drier in the east of Scotland. Southern England may become brighter with some sunny spells developing. Highs at 7 to 12C.

Thursday 14/2/19
Pressure is high again to the south and east on Thursday, lower to the north and west. A dry day for many with the best of any sunshine in the east. Western areas tending to be breezier with some cloud and outbreaks of rain affecting the far west of Scotland and western Ireland. Highs at 6 to 12C.

Friday 15/2/19
High pressure stays to the east on Friday. This brings another a fair day with sunny spells for most, the best of these in the east. A little cooler in the east at 6C but 9C in the west.

Saturday 16/2/19
Pressure stays high on Saturday. This brings a fair day with sunny spells to much of the UK and Ireland. Some low cloud and drizzle may affect southern Ireland as well western Scotland. Highs at 5 to 10C.
