Chilly next week

After a run of mild days this week, temperatures will drop again by the weekend as winds turn back to the north-west. A changeable outlook is expected into next week, with milder conditions briefly returning on Monday. Indications suggest that wintry conditions may develop more widely during the final days of November.

Friday 24/11/17
A slow-moving front is expected to trail across south-eastern Britain, bringing rain which may locally persist for many hours. For many places, it should be a dry and bright day, with weak sunshine through high cloud in central England. Sunnier skies for northern regions, although a scattering of showers are possible for the north & west of Scotland & Ireland. Snow over the mountains. Winds generally light. Highs 6 to 11C.

Saturday 25/11/17
Detail is uncertain. Most likely a cool day with west to north-westerly winds bringing a mix of sunshine and showers. The showers most frequent toward the north & west, with snow and hail over the hills, but at times falling to low levels. A chance of fronts moving across central & southern regions bringing more extensive rain, and possible hill snow for Wales & northern England, accompanied by coastal gales. Temperatures 4 to 8C.

Sunday 26/11/17
Staying chilly, with bands of wintry showers spreading from the north-west, resulting in locally frequent rain, hail and snow across the hills - falling to quite low levels across Scotland. Sunny spells for central & south-eastern Britain, where it may stay largely dry. Feeling cool in the breeze. Frosty in the morning in sheltered spots where skies clear. Daytime highs 5 to 9C, mildest in the south-west.

Monday 27/11/17
Broadly unsettled with low pressure in charge. Milder air is expected to move in from the Atlantic as fronts move in. Rain turning persistent for western regions. Patchy rain spreading eastwards on brisk winds. Colder air may quickly return into northern regions, with snow possible over the hills. Highs 6 to 11C.

Tuesday 28/11/17
Low confidence of detail. A risk of cold northerly winds extending across the country. Showery around coasts in the east, west and north, with snow and hail. Brighter inland with sunny spells. Highs 3 to 8C.

Wednesday 29/11/17
Likely staying chilly, with sunshine and wintry showers. Frost overnight. Daytime temperatures 3 to 9C, mildest toward the south-west.
