Quiet at first but then unsettled at the weekend and turning colder next week

A quiet start to the week with more dry weather but low cloud, mist and fog for some. Changes take place at the weekend as strong south-westerly winds develop bringing rain, some of it heavy, followed by wintry showers in the north. There are hints of cold weather next week with a mix of sunshine and wintry showers for all.

Friday 24/1/20
The high-pressure remains on Friday although a week front lies through Northern Ireland and Northern England. Mist and fog may be widespread across much of central, southern and eastern England as well as Wales and southern Ireland. This only slowly breaking to allow for some sunny spells. Cloud might be thicker closer to the front where they could be some drizzle and patchy rain on the hills. Probably brighter in Scotland with decent spells of sunshine. Highs at 3C in northern Scotland, 8C in northern England and 6C in southern England.


Saturday 25/1/20
Changes taking place on Saturday as a stronger Southwest wind develops. This will be bringing more cloud to northern and western areas, where there will be some drizzle and rain on Western coast and hills. The best of any brightness in the east after morning mist and fog clears. Windy in Ireland and western Scotland. Highs at 6 to 9C.
 


Sunday 26/1/20
Low pressure north of Scotland brings tain through Ireland with a risk of snow in western Scotland. Drier further south, but some drizzle over western coasts and hills. Windy for all with widespread gales. Highs at 3C in northern Scotland, 9C in southern England.
 


Monday 27/1/20
Low pressure north of Scotland on Monday. A front brings heavy rain in England, Wales and Ireland. Sunny spells following through Scotland, Ireland and northern England bringing wintry showers here, some heavy in the northwest. Remaining breezy. Highs at 3C in northern Scotland, 13C in southeast England.


Tuesday 28/1/20
A colder day across all parts of the UK and Ireland. Breezy with a mix of sunny spells and wintry showers, these heavy across western Scotland. Temperatures rising to between 2 and 6C.

Wednesday 29/1/20
Remaining cold through Wednesday with further sunny spells but also wintry showers. The showers could merge to longer spells sleet and snow in some western areas. Temperatures at 2 to 5C
