A cold week ahead with rain, sleet and snow showers expected
A cold northerly flow at the start of this week brings wintry showers mainly to exposed coastal areas of the British Isles and over higher ground. By next weekend there are hints of this flow becoming easterly bringing further outbreaks of sleet and snow over eastern parts of England and Scotland.

New Year's Day 01/01/21 Staying cold in to the New Year. Areas of wintry showers in places, but particularly across northern Scotland and the southwest of the UK. Wintry showers could also affect southeastern Scotland, northeast England, the East Midlands, East Anglia and the southeast. These may merge to give longer spells of precipitation. A good amount of dry weather about too with frost. The best of the sun over Ireland and the west of the UK. Local fog patches. Highs at -1 to 4C.
Saturday 02/01/21 A cold northeasterly wind prevails into Saturday. Light wind and some fog patches to start. Frosty but bright and largely dry. Any local wintry showers tend to be concentrated over northern Scotland and eastern parts of the UK. Some showers may affect Irish Sea coasts too. High temperatures at 0 to 5C.
Sunday 03/01/21 Winds start to veer easterly into Sunday as low pressure develops to the southeast. This brings wintry showers into the southeastern half of the British Isles. Staying drier over northern and western areas with the best of the sun for Ireland, Northern Ireland and northern Scotland. Highs at -1 to 6C.
Monday 04/01/21 Monday could see low pressure bring an area of rain, sleet and snow accompanied by stronger winds across southern parts of the UK - mainly affecting England and Wales. Staying dry and fine over much of Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Highs of 0 to 5C.
Tuesday 05/01/21 Low pressure to the south and high pressure to the north keeps a cold easterly flow over the UK and Ireland. Detail is uncertain at this stage but further outbreaks of patchy rain, sleet and snow are expected over parts of England, Ireland and Wales. Highs of -1 to 5C.
Wednesday 06/01/21 Pressure may build over the UK and Ireland bringing a mostly dry and fine day. Some patches of mist and fog may form and a widespread frost is expected. Some patchy rain and sleet may affect far northern and southern areas. Highs of 2 to 5C.
