Risk locally significant snow in northeast early in week

Cold weather patterns will take us into the start of 2021, thanks to a general northerly airflow across the British Isles. Areas of snow showers, may become more organised in the northeast for a time. Frosty most nights, but some bright days.

Monday 28/12/20
Low-pressure to the south on Monday. This brings a cold day with snow showers, sleet or rain confined to lowest ground near coasts - most prolonged over northern Scotland and Northern Ireland, locally also northeast England. Clusters of wintry showers for coasts in west Wales and southwest England. Strong northerly winds in western areas. Drier and brighter for many central areas. Highs 2 to 5C.

Tuesday 29/12/20
Another cold day with low pressure to the east of the country and a general northerly wind. This brings with it rain, sleet and snow to many northern and eastern areas. Risk of more persistent snow developing for eastern Scotland and northeast England later. Tending to be drier in central and western areas. Breezy near western coasts. Highs 3 to 5C.
 

Wednesday 30/12/20
Cold northerly winds continue. Further areas of snow focused toward the northeast. Snow showers running into East Anglis too, and draped around coasts in the west. The Midlands and central-southern England should be mainly dry. Sunshine, and frosty where sheltered from the wind. Highs 1 to 5C.
 

Thursday 31/12/20
Detail becomes uncertain, but the outlook remains cold. Further areas of snow showers, sleet near coasts. Sunshine and frosty conditions for many inland areas. Highs 1 to 4C.

Friday 01/01/21
A chilly start to the New Year. Areas of wintry showers in places, but also a good amount of dry weather with frost. Local fog patches. Wind mostly light. Highs 1 to 4C.

Saturday 02/01/21
Slack pressure patterns are expected, with chilly conditions prevailing. Light wind and some fog patches. Frosty but bright. Local wintry showers. Highs 1 to 5C.
