A change to wetter and milder weather from Sunday

The cold weather persists into the weekend. Generally dry, although a few snow showers here and there close to coasts. Overnight skies will be clearer for many with widespread severe frosts continuing. Milder, windy and wetter weather is expected to arrive on Sunday with snow ahead of the rain in some places.

Saturday 17/12/22
Cold again on Saturday although the winds turn more to the south. This may encourage some more widespread cloud and some mist and fog patches to develop. The best of any brightness in the east. Drizzle may affect western coasts and hills with some rain in western Ireland. A slightly milder day at 2 to 4C while 6C in the southwest.
 


Sunday 18/12/22
Increasing winds on Sunday, becoming gale force in the west. Many areas are cold again, and feeling bitterly cold in the wind. Milder weather and heavy rain through Ireland and southwestern parts of Wales and England by daybreak. The rain and winds passing east but increasingly preceded by snow over northern and eastern England as well as much of Scotland before turning back to rain in the west and the milder air arrives for all by evening. Highs by evening at 4C in the east, 12C in the west.

Monday 19/12/22
Low pressure to the northwest of Scotland on Monday. A strong southwest wind with gales at times in the west and south. Outbreaks of rain, some of them heavy and passing east and north. A milder day at 10 to 13C, but then turning cooler in Ireland and Scotland again later.

Tuesday 20/12/22
Staying windy on Tuesday with some blustery showers affecting western coasts and hills, dry for most. Rain gradually clearing the SE. A chillier day with the precipitation falling as snow showers in northern and western Scotland as well as western Wales and the north and west of Ireland. Highs at 7 to 11C.

Wednesday 21/12/22
A northwesterly flow through the country on Wednesday. Feeling cold in the brisk wind. This is going to be bringing some snow showers to northern and western coasts and hills. Drier in eastern and southern areas and brighter too. Feeling cold in the wind. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Thursday 22/12/22
Low pressure sits to the north of Scotland on Thursday. Slacker winds generally but still breezy across northern Scotland where where there are likely to be sleet and snow showers. Most place staying dry with sunny spells. Highs at 5 to 7C.
