Windy and wet at times, mild in the south and colder north, then less changeable next week

A mixed week with rain and gales on some days, especially in the run up to New Year. It is likely to be mild on most days in the south, colder in the north with some snow at times over the hills of Scotland and northern England. A tendency to be a little less changeable after New Year.

New Year's Eve 31/12/22
Becoming wet again across Ireland, Wales and much of central and southern England on New Year's Eve. Most of the rain will be patchy with lots of low cloud shrouding hills, although some more moderate bursts may affect western hills. Damp in northwest England and Northern Ireland. Colder in Scotland with the risk of some sleet and snow in the west, drier in the east. Highs at 4 to 7C for many, but 10 to 12C in southern England and East Anglia.

New Year's Day 1/1/23
Low pressure brings a damp start to 2023 for many, although mild in many areas of England, Wales and Ireland. Drier in northern Scotland and staying cold here. Some snow through central and southern Scotland. Highs at 5C in northern Scotland, 8C for northern England, 12C in southern England.

Holiday Monday 2/1/23
A colder day for Monday as low pressure brings some cloud and outbreaks of rain, perhaps some sleet and hills snow to northern parts of England and southern Scotland, Rain in eastern England slowly clearing, then turning drier from the west. Highs at 5 to 8C.

Tuesday 3/1/23
Higher pressure builds in the east on Tuesday. This brings fair weather to many eastern areas. A fron passing through Ireland and into the west of the UK will be bringing cloudier skies and periods of rain here. Highs around 3 to 9C.

Wednesday 4/1/23
A weak ridge of high pressure affecting southern areas on Wednesday. Dry for many with some sunshine in the east. Low cloud and drizzle over western coasts and hills. Windy and wet in Scotland and the west of Ireland, but drier in the east. A risk of gale sof rIreland and Scotland. Highs at 12C in southern England, 7C in northwest Scotland.

Thursday 5/1/23
Cloud and some outbreaks of rain through Ireland and northern England on Thursday. Drizzle for western Wales and southwest England, but drier in the east. Brighter for Scotland, but some rain in the south. Highs at 5 to 11C.
