Duty forecaster: Alexi Venerus

Chilly, settled weather being replaced by wind and rain yet milder conditions next week.

High pressure gradually sinks southwards this weekend. Staying mainly dry but chilly initially and by early next week spells of rain and strengthening winds yet milder conditions are expected. It is currently looking particularly unsettled with heavy bouts of rain and high winds from later on Tuesday through the rest of the week.

Monday 8/3/21
A largely dry day across England and Wales although cloud will build from the north, best of the lasting sunshine furthest south. Meanwhile, rain will spread eastwards across Ireland and Northern Ireland as well as Scotland, possibly touching into northwest England too by the end of the day. Highs at 5 to 11C.

Tuesday 9/3/21
Starting dry for most, but rain will soon spread across Ireland, Northern Ireland and then push eastwards into western areas of England, Scotland and Wales as the day progresses. Currently, eastern areas will stay mainly dry during the day with rain expected here overnight. Southwesterly winds strengthening to gale force and possibly strong gale force towards the northwest. Reasonably mild with highs between 7 and 12C.

Wednesday 10/3/21
A wet and cloudy start for southern and southeastern areas of England and Wales before rain eventually clears this region later in the day. Elsewhere, it will be a day of sunny spells, these best in the east, and blustery showers, these turning into longer spells of rain towards the west. Winds stay strong to gale force strength. Highs at 6 to 10C in the north but a milder 9 to 14C in the south.

Thursday 11/3/21
Low pressure remains in control through Thursday. There will be showers merging into longer spells of rain, mainly affecting western areas but likely to spread eastwards across Scotland and northern England through the day. Best of the dry weather towards eastern areas and the southeast of England. Highs at 6 to 12C.

Friday 12/3/21
Low pressure still close by Scotland on Friday and it will continue to blow through a strong to near gale force westerly wind across the country. A day of sunny spells and blustery showers, these will be most frequent in the west but will also reach eastern areas at times. Highs at 6 to 11C.

Saturday 13/3/21
Currently, a developing area of low pressure will push across Wales and England on Saturday which would bring spells of rain here, heavy at times, although confidence in this development is low at this stage. It is looking to be a largely cloudy day further north with some outbreaks of rain but dry periods too. Highs at 6 to 11C.
