Heavy rain & gales by Friday

Thursday
The British Isles briefly lies between weather systems, and many places in central England & Wales should stay dry all day. A risk of showers breaking out inland across northern Britain and Ireland, which may cluster together locally for a time in the afternoon. Fronts approaching from Biscay bring rain to southwest England by afternoon into evening, turning heavy and becoming more extensive into the night. Light winds, freshening later. Highs at 18 to 25C for most, warmest southeast, cooler northwest.


Thursday night
Low pressure continues to make inroads from the southwest across the British Isles through Thursday night and into Friday morning. Heavy rain sweeping northeastward across Ireland, England and Wales reaching Northern Ireland and central Scotland by daybreak. Most places south of central Scotland seeing at least some rain through the night. Winds freshening too reaching near gale force, with stronger gusts, for many southern and western areas. Overnight lows at 10 to 18C.


Friday
Fronts will continue to sweep northwards, associated with the area of low pressure centred to the southwest. A spell of heavy rainfall for many places, with a risk of local thunder. The most persistent falls transferring into Scotland and Ireland through the day, whilst a rash of heavy showers will move across England & Wales from the southwest. Blustery winds, risk gusting gale force around exposed southwestern coasts. Highs at 16 to 24C.


Saturday
Low pressure centred over the northern UK brings periods of heavy rain to north and western regions. Showery for many places, while some eastern & southeastern parts of England may stay dry. Windy across southern counties, gales around coasts and headlands. Temperatures up to 22C in the southeast, nearer 16 to 20C for most, cooler where rain persists.
