Staying cold
Rain, sleet and snow

Wednesday
Cold northerly winds prevail into Wednesday. Further areas of snow focused toward the northwest. Showers, some wintry, running down some eastern English coasts and into East Anglia too first thing. A weak area of low pressure is expected to develop bringing outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow to parts of Ireland, Wales and southwestern and southern parts of England. Brighter conditions and wintry showers follow this. Highs at just 0 to 4C for most, 5 or 6C in far southwestern parts of the UK and Ireland.

Wednesday night
Low pressure clears the south of England overnight from Wednesday into Thursday while further outbreaks of sleet and snow develop over the eastern half of Scotland. Wintry showers also affect western Scotland and coastal areas around the Irish Sea while snow showers develop over higher ground in the north of England and Wales. Overnight lows widely below freezing at -4 to -1C for most allowing for a widespread frost and ice patches to develop.

New Year's Eve
Hogmanay remains cold. An area of rain, sleet and snow slides south through eastern and southern Scotland into northern and western England and Wales. Staying drier over eastern England with just a slight chance of isolated wintry showers here. Brighter later over Scotland and for Northern Ireland and Ireland with frequent showers, some wintry, over northern and western coasts. High temperatures range from 1 to 5C.

New Year's Day
Staying cold in to the New Year. Areas of wintry showers in places, but particularly across northern Scotland and the southwest of the UK. Wintry showers could also affect southeastern Scotland and eastern parts of England. These may merge to give longer spells of precipitation. A good amount of dry weather about too with frost. The best of the sun over Ireland and the west of the UK. Local fog patches. Highs at -1 to 4C.
