Heavy rain, some snow
Chilly north, milder south

Friday
A wet day to come on Friday through many areas as low pressure dominates the weather across the British Isles. Rain could be heavy at times as it passes eastwards and brings a risk of some localised flooding. Snow affects the hills of Scotland. Turning drier from the west with cloud breaking and some bright spells developing, although staying cloudy and wet in northern Scotland. Highs at 4C in northern Scotland, 12C in southern England.

Friday Night
A drier first half of the night, though sleet and snow still across the far north of Scotland. More rain moves in across southern England, Wales and Ireland into northern England and southwest Scotland by morning. Lows at -2 to 3C in the north, 5 to 10C further south.

New Year's Eve
Becoming wet again across Ireland, Wales and much of central and southern England on New Year's Eve. Most of the rain by afternoon will be patchy with lots of low cloud shrouding hills, although some more moderate bursts may affect western hills. Damp in northwest England and Northern Ireland. Colder in Scotland with the risk of some sleet and snow. Highs at 4 to 7C for many, but 10 to 12C in southern England and East Anglia.

New Year's Day
Low pressure brings a rather cloudy start to 2023 for many, although mild in many areas of England, Wales and Ireland. Drier and brighter in northern Scotland and staying cold here. Some snow through central and southern Scotland. Highs at 3C in northern Scotland, 8C for northern England, 12C in southern England.
