A weak cold front drifts across southern Britain early in the day, bringing cloud and patchy rain. This will fade, with brighter skies developing. Sunny spells for central & northern regions, although a few bands of showers may feed in from the Irish Sea into north-west England. Showery for northern Scotland, with snow falling across the mountains above about 400-500m, plus possible hail. A brisk and chilly westerly wind, strongest in the north, but easing a little. Highs 7 to 11C.

Friday night
Rain spreads quickly across Ireland through the evening, extending to Wales & western England, later more widely central & southern regions. Heaviest falls overnight for western hills of Wales, but a few hours of persistent rain is likely for much of southern Britain. Largely dry and clear toward the north. Showers toward the far north. Windy around southern coasts, risk local gales. Mild in the south, 9 to 12C, but dipping to 2 to 5C north, or below 0C in the Highlands.

Saturday
Some rain may continue to affect southern England early in the morning, but will soon clear. Cloudy skies breaking from the north to give good amounts of sunshine across much of the country. A chance of some rain returning toward southern Ireland. Wintry showers draped around the coasts of northern Britain, falling as snow or hail to fairly low elevations in Scotland, and accumulating across the mountains. Cool north-westerly winds. Highs 6 to 10C.

Sunday
A chilly but bright day for many places. Bands of showers spreading from the north, affecting eastern coasts, and also moving inland from the Irish Sea toward north-west England, north Wales and the Midlands - wintry over higher ground, perhaps snow or hail briefly to lower levels. Northern Scotland will see frequent snow showers, giving accumulations to quite low levels. Brisk north to north-westerly winds. Highs 5 to 8C, but feeling closer to zero in the wind.
