Cold weather arrives
Frost, ice and snow

Monday
A cold morning with a slight frost for a few areas. A band of rain, sleet and snow pushes south through Scotland during the morning and then into northern England and Wales as the day progresses. Snow falling not just to the high ground but to some lower levels further north. Frequent and heavy snow showers thereafter will push on to northern Scotland. Meanwhile, the rest of England and Ireland will see cloudy skies and showery outbreaks of rain. A chilly day with highs at 5 to 8C.

Monday Night
A cold night with a widespread harsh frost developing across the north and west. Rain progressively turns to sleet and snow showers down coastal counties and over higher ground through Scotland, England and Wales. Mostly rain is expected across much of Wales, the Midlands and southern regions of England. Lows dropping to -3 to -5C in places across the north, 0 to 4C across more southern areas.

Tuesday
Tuesday starts bitterly cold with frost and ice and it will continue to be a cold day ahead. A cold front of mostly showery rain gradually clears far southern English counties during the morning and a cold northerly wind flow pushes down the country making it feel sub zero for many. Many places centrally and further west will be dry with sunshine. Frequent snow showers affecting northern Scotland as well as down eastern counties of the UK. Highs at a cold 3 to 6C.

Wednesday
A widespread harsh frost with ice first thing and it will continue to feel cold on Wednesday. Plenty of sunshine across much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and north England though expect snow showers to affect northern Scotland and down some coastal counties with some pushing further inland. Starting bright with sunny spells but turning progressively cloudy further south with outbreaks of rain, snow on the leading edge and over higher ground, moving in across southwest England then south Wales and further east across southern English counties. Further north and east from here should remain largely dry though snow showers on to coastal counties. Highs at a cold 4 to 7C.
