Cold through midweek
Local snow showers

Tuesday
Very cold and extensively frosty and icy throughout the day and across much of the nation. Largely dry with sunny spells, extensively sunny over many central and eastern areas. Expect snow showers affecting northern and western coasts and hills, coming in on the northwesterly breeze. Snow showers frequently pushing on to northern Wales and the Liverpool area into Cheshire. Northwest Scotland also prone to frequent snow. Highs struggling to lift much above zero; 0 to 4C.

Tuesday night
Snow showers continue to affect some coastal areas in the west and north overnight as a northerly breeze continues. Otherwise it will be dry with variable amounts of cloud but lengthy clear spells in many places. Temperatures falling widely below freezing, around -1C in towns and cities, but down to -3 to -5C in rural areas, so expect widespread frost and ice.

Wednesday
Cold, frosty and icy again with sunny spells and mostly dry weather. Showers near coasts mainly in north and west, many will be wintry with northern Scotland seeing frequent snow, heavy at times. Showers too for north and west Wales, mostly snow or hail, rain at times near to coasts. Some brief some snow flurries running further inland are possible too. A brisker wind will make it feel even colder. Highs struggling again at 1 to 5C. Extensively frosty again overnight.

Thursday
Starting cold and frosty. High pressure starts to build from the west. Most will be dry with sunny spells and fairly light winds. A few snow showers grazing northern Scotland. Breezy near to eastern coasts, feeling very chilly again in the northerly wind. Some high cloud builds for Ireland and southwestern Britain as fronts move nearby, perhaps a little sleet or rain from this. Highs 3 to 6C.
