Boxing Day gales
Rain & hill snow in northwest

Boxing Day
Windy with low pressure northwest of Scotland and fronts passing east. Wet in western Scotland through the day - snow over the Highlands and Grampians. Heavier rain reaching northwest England during the afternoon. Risk of some localised flooding. Drizzly for Wales and the southwest. Tending to be drier in southeast England. Despite slightly milder temperatures, the wind will ensure it remains feeling cold. Gales becoming widespread, severe in the west. Highs 4 to 8C.

Boxing Day night
Widespread gales extend across England and Wales, potential for damaging gusts in places, reaching 70-80mph around exposed coasts in the south. Heavy rain sweeps southeastwards through the night. Snow across hills in northern England and Wales, falling to increasingly low levels, possible hail. Showers also for western Scotland and Ireland. Clearing skies for central-eastern Scotland. Temperatures ranging from 8C in southern England, to 0C in Scotland, or sub-zero Highland glens.

Sunday
A colder day for all. Low pressure will be centred over Scotland. Frequent precipitation for western regions of Britain and across Ireland, snow often falling to low levels, risk of hail. Early rain clears from southeast England, may give snow on higher ground briefly as it clears. Drier and brighter across the Midlands and eastern England with sunny spells. Staying breezy, although the strongest winds from overnight will ease. Highs at 3 to 6C.

Monday
Low-pressure drifts southwards across Britain. This brings a cold day with snow showers, sleet or rain confined to lowest ground near coasts - most prolonged over northern Scotland and Northern Ireland, locally also northeast England. Clusters of wintry showers for coasts in west Wales and southwest England. Strong northerly winds in western areas. Drier and brighter for many central areas. Highs 2 to 5C.
