Morning Call - February 09, 2020
Widespread gales
Heavy rain

Issued: 0530hrs Sunday 9th February 2020
Duty forecaster: Claire Darbinyan

Gales will be widespread across the UK and Ireland today as a deep area of low pressure passes to the north of Scotland. It will also bring outbreaks of rain, which will be heavy at times. Showers follow the rain and these may also be locally heavy and/or wintry in nature.

Good Morning,

Heavy rain spreads across Ireland, Northern Ireland, much of Scotland, Wales and across northern and central parts of England this morning as a deep area of low pressure to the northwest sends a series of fronts and troughs southeastward across the country. A band of lighter rain lies ahead of the heavier rain and will bring some light rain across southeastern parts of England through the morning. The strongest winds will be for western and southern coasts and will reach severe gale force. Gusts of up to 80mph are possible for Welsh coasts, around southern parts of England and inland over higher ground in England.

Through Sunday afternoon, the heaviest rain is expected to clear away from most areas with the exception of the far southeast of England where it will linger into the evening. Showers, some heavy and some wintry, follow the rain and will tend to be focussed over, but not limited, to western areas. The strongest winds through the afternoon will be to the far north and far south of the UK with the potential for storm force winds to the north and severe gales through the English Channel. Gusts of up to 80mph remain a possibility for southern coastal parts of England.

The main band of rain clears southeastern England through the evening but frequent showers and pulses of rain continue to affect much of the country. Tending to be drier to the east which is also where the best of any clear skies will be. Winds stay very strong with severe gales for western, southern and northern areas. Inland gusts ease through the evening but could still widely reach 45 to 50mph across the country.

Stay safe out there today!
